Why Sustainability?
The global environment is facing serious and eventually lethal problems.
- Pollution of water, air, and soil
- Uncontrolled waste dumping
- Global warming
- Loss of drinking water supply
- Deforestation
What is environmental Sustainability, and why is important?
- Environmental sustainability is reducing the negative impact of one's actions upon the environment
- If our negative impact is not curtailed, the outcome will result in a hazardous and often unsuitable natural environment for us
Why is Environmental Sustainability important to CCNY?
- CCNY has 12K+ students. From per capita data, we estimate that CCNY produces over 27,000 pounds of waste each day or 13 ½ tons of waste*, and consumes over 427,000 kWh of electricity daily which contributes to 280 tons of CO2 emissions a year*.
Colleges and Universities can and do play a major role in environmental education, both on their campus and in their communities through:
- Research
- Policy Making
- Information Exchange
"It’s our duty to
implement policies that raise awareness and increase sustainable practices."
