About Us

Our Mission

Sustainable CCNY* promotes social, ecological and economic sustainability at The City College of New York, by bringing students, faculty and staff together to encourage the development of sustainable practices that benefit of the entire CCNY community.

To this end, Sustainable CCNY’s goals and initiatives are to:

  • Encourage faculty, staff, and students to factor ecological, social, and economic consequences into all of their personal and professional decisions.
  • Research, promote and implement the most effective sustainability practices possible on the City College campus.
  • Form a group of students, faculty and staff, which will serve as a network that encourages the development of sustainable practices on campus.
  • Educate fellow students about current environmental issues that are present on campus and in our daily lives, and the specific ways we can change our activities to reduce our negative impacts.

Our main topics of interest include:

  • Waste prevention, reuse, recycling and composting
  • Conserving energy and reducing greenhouse emissions
  • Encouraging environmentally preferable purchasing (e.g. recycled-content office supplies, remanufactured office furniture, non-toxic cleaning supplies, local/seasonal food for food services)
